Top lists — by the numbers

12 ranked lists comparing all 50 US states on the costs that matter — first-year total, annual renewal, sales tax on vehicles, EV fees, and structural tax features. Every list uses the same baseline scenario for genuinely apples-to-apples ranking.

Cost rankings

How states stack up on total registration cost — first year and ongoing.

Sales tax rankings

States with the highest and lowest sales tax on vehicle purchases.

Electric vehicle rankings

EV-specific fees, incentives, and total cost of ownership.

Structural features

Which states have unique tax structures — ad valorem, trade-in credit, no sales tax, etc.

How these lists are computed

Every ranking uses the same baseline: a new $35,000 gas passenger vehicle, 3,800 lbs, registered for the first time in 2026, using each state's typical local sales tax rate. EV-specific lists use the same vehicle but with EV pricing and surcharges applied. Numbers come directly from the same calculator that powers each state's individual page — sourced from state DMV publications, state tax statutes, and the U.S. Department of Energy's Alternative Fuels Data Center.

Your actual cost will vary by county, exact vehicle weight, fuel efficiency, plate type, and other factors. Verify with your state DMV before any purchase or registration decision.
